A broodmare is a mare that is used for producing foals. It can also be a riding horse that has had a foal. It all depends on what else she has done, but she must have had a foal. If the word prospect is used, then it means that she has the potential to have foals but has not had any yet.
If you see the word open with this word, it means that she is not currently bred. If foal at side is used, it means that she has a young foal that has not been weaned yet. And of course in foal means that she is pregnant at that time.
