how do you know what dress size you where?

there is no such thing as a standard dress size in teh united states. many manufacturers will use similar measurements, but not all, and then some manufacturers will vary the measurements by style, as well.
you should have your measurements taken, reliably, and also know that you should try on each garment you are considering buying.
and, btw, there has been 'vanity sizing' changes in the past 20 years, so 3 times in the past 20 years size numbers changed.

dress and/or clothing size is dependent on what your measurements are for your bust, waist and hips. And not all brands are created equal. You could be an 8 in one brand and a 6 or 10 in another.

Key measurements are the bust (measure around the fullest part, like when measure your bra), wait, measure at your narrowest part (usually about an in or so above your belly button or where you indent when you bend to side) and your hips, is your fullest part around your hips.

Most clothing websites will have size charts that you can look at once you measure yourself. And if you are between sizes, buy the dress to fit the largest measurement. You can always have it altered/tailored.
