yes most dx10 games i know of will be backwards compatible with dx9 and xp ... but i dont think any dx10 games have been released yet so dont worry about it ... since ur pc is dx10 compliant it is a vista machine .. and u want my honest opinion vista is the problem .. and a black screen in a game usually means a video driver problem ... another vista virtue .. drivers arnt very compatible with it ...

From your description the likely answer is that you have outdated drivers. I have a directx 10 graphics card and i can play old directx 9.0c games fine. Go to windows updater and download the latest drivers for your computer, also if you have an ATI or Nvidia card to go their site and download the appropriate drivers for your graphics card.

DirectX is always backwards compatible.
You probably just need to run the latest Updates for DX at the MS site. (See source for the link)
If that does not fix the problem, try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP.
If that still doesn't work, get the latest drivers for your card at Nvidia.com

I doubt it has anything at all to do with what DirectX version you are using. The problem is most likely the graphics card itself. Don't take this personally, but the graphics cards is junk. I would not be at all surprised if this game you bought was fairly new that it wouldn't work on that card, it is a very very low end card, and its old as well.

NVIDIA 6100 is not DirectX10 compatible and DirectX10 is "NOT" backwards compatible with any other version...you should uninstall 10 and reinstall 9.0c...gaming won't catch up with 10 until later this year or next.
