I know there have been many extraordinary rulers before him, (none since) but could they have influenced their people so strongly? Was anyone else ever so respected or feared?

I say intelligent after reding Mein Kampf.
His ideas for the removal of crime, disease and poverty, while inhumane, were quite brilliant and would have been relatively effective.

That stupid paperhanger?

HOW **dumb** was Hitler?

-- He was SO dumb, he called off his blitz of Britain JUST before he could have successfully invaded and captured the place.

-- He was SO dumb, he invaded Russia... totally dismissing the lessons that Napoleon had so much learned the hard way.

Not even counting the MANY other abjectly stupid and murderous things that he did, those two alone are monumental.

If Hitler had REALLY been intelligent, he would have built Germany, within its then-current borders, into the sort of powerful and sane country that it is today -- with a 60-year head start. Instead, he was greedy and cruel. NOT intelligent.

= = = = =

To "npleck" -- So you're British, and you have a **president**?

How much of the rest of your answer is lying garbage, too?

Well -- we can probably surmise that you at least are the mindless bigot that fits your decription of yourself.

There's a word for people like that. Losers.

To be an "effective" leader, you have to be both bold and persuasive. ("Effective" has both positive and negative connotations)

Sure Hitler was very "bold"- he promised to end Germany's economic plight over night if the people would give him absolute power. He was also "persuasive"- he some how convinced the entire nation into following his ideology of hate and systematical mass murder of a group of people.

However, was Hitler Intelligent? I don't really know. Would an intelligent man tell his exhausted troops at Stalingrad "no retreat!"? Would an intelligent man order invisible divisions to attack advancing allies from a room 25 feet under solid concrete? Would an intelligent man actually think that killing all the Jews in Europe would somehow solve all of Germany's problems? and Would an intelligent man fight till his entire country was laid to waste with millions of its people dead than seek peace?

Hitler was respected by millions, sure. But that respect came out of fear. Ask yourself this question though, if you disagree; was Germany better off in May of 1945, or January of 1933?

You have to understand the scenario in which Hitler arose. Germany had been defeated and humiliated, especially by the French, and the Weimar Republic had done little to improve the situation. Hitler was able to play upon essentially German pride.

Bold and persuasive I'll give you, but there have been leaders much more intelligent.

Surprise!!!! Adolf was diagnosed as a psychopath. He also took daily shots of drugs which kept him going. He was a very sick piece of s**t who killed millions upon millions of innocent people in order to satisfy his own warped ego and goals. If you believe that Hitler was an intelligent man then you need help. He had a warped mind and body and the world would have been better off if he had never been born.

hitler was a rookie compared to many in the past, hirohito managed to maintain his position after japan fell, and how about julius ceaser, richard the lion hearted, ghengis kahn, kublai kahn, alexander the great, peter the great, henry the 8th, and heck mohammed not only led a nation, he created a whole religion! and dont forget czar nicholas. also remember kaiser wilhelm 1, 2, and even 3 were better than hitler, as is fidel castro.

I myself am British and im 'supposed' to hate Germany, however I think when Hitler was around Germany was a great country that didn't take crap from anyone and stood up for what they believed in. I respect Hitler as a man and as a politician, yeah he killed jews, what of it, he didn't want non Germans in his country and I wish to god our president was like that because if he was then I am certain my country would be a hell of a lot better than what it is now. Hitler invented the term white supremacy, the signs and slogans are still around even today and Nazi's in my book are good people who respect there colour, there country and there birth right.

he was a very talented public speaker and manipulator. he took a shattered nation and rebuilt it into a world force in around 10 years. don't get me wrong, he was a terrible man, but he has his place in history as a talented, and troubled man

You like murderers who intimidate and torture in order to gain compliance and allegiance?

You didn't mention Idi Amin or Josef Stalin or Mao Tse Tung. They were "respected" and feared. And I guess they were pretty smart, too. How about Jim Jones?

What about George Washington or Winston Churchill?
