(3x - 1)(x + 2)

Since 3 is prime, the coefficients on the x's in the binomials must be 1 and 3. Since 2 is prime, the constants must be 1 and 2. The only thing left is to figure out which constant goes with which coefficient, and then apply the correct signs.

The only way to get 5x from those numbers is 6x - 1x, so that solves the problem of where the 1 and the 2 go.

Here is the method:

1.Multiply the constant coefficient and the quadratic coefficient:
In your case you get 3(-2)=-6.

2. Find two numbers that multiply to give the result from step 1, but add to give the linear coefficient:
In your case, we want two things that multiply to give -6, but add to give 5. Trial and error gives -1 and 6 since (-1)(6)=-6 and (-1)+(6)=5.

3. Split the linear term using the result from step 2.
In your case, you get
3x^2 +5x -2=
3x^2 +6x -x-2.

4. Factor common terms from the first two terms. Do the same for the last two terms.
In your case, you get
3x(x+2)-(x+2)

5. Complete the factoring:
(3x-1)(x+2).

Comments: In step 3, you have a choice which direction to write things. You will get the same answer either way, eventually.

If you can't do step 2, the quadratic doesn't factor.

(3x -1)(x + 2) = 0

Solving for x, if 3x-1=0, then x=1/3
if x+2=0, then x= -2

3x^2 + 5x - 2 = 0
(3x - 1 ) (x + 2 ) = 0

x = 1/3 & x = -2

answer as a factor
(3x - 1 ) (x + 2 )

(x+2)(3x-1)=0
(if you need the possible answers for x, here they are)
x= -2, 1/3

3x^2+5x-2=0
Using the "splitting the middle term" method this can be rewritten as:
3x^2+6x-1x-2=0
3x(x+2) - 1(x-2)=0
(3x-1)(x+2)=0
Hence the factors are: (3x-1) and (x+2)......Ans
