Personally, a lot of people can make great arguements for either QB based on their various accomplishments. So before i give my opinion, lets look at the facts:

Career Wins:
Elway: 148 Marino: 147

Super Bowls:
Elway: 5 Marino: 1

Passing records:
Elway: a few Marino: most of them

Now lets point out a few "opinions" that most people point out when deciding whos better:

1. "Marino never had a running game or a defense" Very true, but he did have a lot of help in the passing game at WR throughout his career, or did you all forget the Hall of Fame receiveing duo " The Mark Brothers" (Mark Duper and Mark Clayton) he had majority of his career?

2. "Elway took them to 5 superbowls with very little talent" Not entirely true because Denver did have a great defense in those superbowl years and a few good targets and runningbacks for him. Also, during the 80's and mid 90's when he went, how good was the AFC anyway? It's the equivilent of today's NFC.

Personally, I feel Dan Marino is the better QB. Although he only went to the Superbowl once, you cant ignore the guy who literally rewrote the record book. Secondly, although because of the inbalance of his team he never got far in the playoffs, he still almost matched Elway in career wins, which is one major stat for QBs. If he had more of a balanced team he could of possibly gotten his ring, but even without it he's still one of the best of all time, and so is John Elway not to knock him off.

I don't believe there is an answer to your question. They are both great quarterbacks. Both are in the hall of fame and while Elway won 2 Super Bowls they both know what it is like to lose one too. Personally I believe it's Marino. Many great QBs never even played in a Super Bowl. And over the course of a career it's only one game. If you knew nothing about football this question would be easy. Go to nfl.com and check the record book for passing. Marinos name appears at least 27 times while Elway is mentioned only 5 times. And 4 times Elways name appeared Marinos name was listed above it. The only time Elways name appeared before Marinos was the category of career sacks. Not a good category to be a leader in. Elway was great but overall I'd give the nod to Marino.

No question - Elway.

Marino had the technical skills. He was a far better quarterback than Montana in that respect. But this isn't fantasy football - this is the NFL.

Marino only took his team to the Superbowl ONCE. UNO. Elway - FIVE times, winning twice. He's started more Superbowls than any other QB. He RAN for touchdowns in 4 different Superbowls - no RUNNING BACK has more than that.

I'm no Broncos fan, but Elway had the intangibles that everyone WISHED Marino had. Marino made it to the big game his second year - it's not as if the Dolphins didn't have time to build a good team around him. The freakin' SALARY CAP didn't come around for another decade. All the Dolphins seemed to build around Dan was a list of excuses for failing.

I'd say Marino because of his statisics and situation. Marino had better stats with a worse team. The first superbowl Elway won, he had Terrel Davis and Shannon Sharpe.Marino had no other Pro Bowlers, let alone Hall of Famers. Elway was better at comebacks, but Marino was an all over better QB.

I say Marino, because he can pass, and has the release and passing ability. Elway is a great QB with the determination, but not the vision nor passing prowess. He is more consistent, but does not have the "highs," or "zones," like Dan did. Dan was almost crazy and intense when he was in a zone. He was the best when he was at his best. It is just bad luck that they never won a ring. If Dan had the fortune of the chips falling in the right place, he would have won at least 1 ring. Dan had more passing talent, and Elway had better teams, and probably a better, even keel. But noone can match Danny when he was in a zone. He made the best and most difficult throws, he was "The Barry Sanders of QBs," and if he had better team, He would have defeated Elway at 1:00 o'clock and then Kelly at 4:00 o'clock !

I hate the broncos but I would have to say Elway. Marino might have all the records but Elway took the broncos to the superbowl 5 times and won 2. The three losses he had were the lack of a credible running game but Elway got them there just the same. The two he did win were because he finally had a decent running game. I also believe he has a higher winning percentage than Marino. In the end it doesn't matter who holds the records but who could win the game when they needed too.

Marino was better. He was a much more accurate passer than Elway (who was also great). The Dolphins never had a running game to help Marino. Don't forget Elway never won a Superbowl until he got some help from Terrell Davis. The Dolphins also didn't have a defense.

Elway carried 3 very bad teams to Super Bowls that they had no business even being in. And then at the end of his career when he finally got a good team around him he won 2 rings. The only QB to go to 5 Super Bowls. Marino couldn't carry any of his teams on his back to Super Bowls the way Elway did.

Both are great QBs. But Marino was the better passer. He made his wide receivers look better than they were. Plus, he never had a running game to support him. If the Dolphins had been able to get a better complement of players around Marino, then he would have won a couple of Super Bowls like Elway.

Marino would be my choice, but if you based it on winning the big one, then of course, the choice would be Elway.

I think there should be a "period" in there somewhere..but to the question, anyone that watched football in the 80's would answer Marino. Elway had "some" help. Marino WAS the team for many years. Had Marino had a runningback for a couple of years, he would have the rings too.
But no matter who you would vote for, I think we all agree the NFL is missing that caliber of QB now. I would love to watch either of those guys play again.
