If you are traveling around in Europe in summer forget what the others say about bringing a large suitcase or taking as much as your luggage limit.
Bring a small size suitcase or better, one that can double as a trolley and backpack, and only fill it 3/4 when you leave home.
You should be able to lift it over your head on stretched arms, (as if to put it in a luggage rack) and carry it for a while. You will find that you always sleep on the top floor of hotels with no lifts.
Bringing old clothes (like undies, socks and pajamas) is a sound advice.
The more often you move from one place to stay to an other, the less luggage you want to bring. It does get heavier without you adding souvenirs, but you will add those too.
Of course, if you are going to spend a month in a seaside resort and want to change three times a day without having to do laundry you will need 2 of the biggest size suitcase you can find and pay for over-luggage both ways.

You need to check your airline website for all the details of size, weight and carry on requirements.
If you have two suitcases, one that will fit within the other bring both. I pack all my clothes in the smaller one and then put that inside the larger one. As I pick up clothes, gifts, etc. on the trip I fill the other case.
I've twice come back from Europe with the large suitcase holding my clothes, etc. and the smaller one filled entirely with chocolates from various countries. Mmmmmmmmm........

I bought what i thought was a medium sized suitcase, but when compared to my friends who went mine was tiny. Pretty much any suitcase you buy at a department store will good for traveling. Although some airlines have weight restrictions, they are crazy high, like 70 lbs.
In short, bring a big suitcase, I wish i would have bought a bigger one, i could have fit more stuff i bought there.

usually you can only have about a medium size one, but it's more restrictions on the amount you put in...usually on international flights to europe, your bag may not be more than 50 or 75 lbs....it varies airline to airline so check in with yours to see what the weight limit is....

Check your airline to find out what its luggage restrictions are. Most have strict weight and size restrictions. My advise is to pack as light as you can. Also, consider packing old socks and underwear that you can dispose of as you use them -- this empties out space in your luggage for souvenirs. (Sometimes, I even carry old pajamas that I toss the morning of my return trip.) Also, be sure to take a midsize dayback to carry water, maps, etc.
