THis depends upon how you are using the space... If this is the part of the kitchen where you cook you certainly don't want four feet from the island where the stove is, for instance, to the counter behind you. Most homes have about 30 to 36 inches between center utlity islands and the work counter along the outside walls. You also want to be sure the refrigerator door swing clears the island, the stove drop front oven door, the dish machine and so on. These should be close enough to be convenient and not so close that they are in the way.

I have an L shaped kitchen and my island is 36 inches from the 2 counters. It seems to be perfect for me at least. Good luck.

Hi Try Hydrogen Peroxide It works great !! It is safe for consumption so will not be harmful where food is prepared. Also a great germ killer. I keep some in a spray bottle, Spray the area let it fizz for a few minutes then wipe away the residue. Good luck

There's no official space. In my kitchen I think it's about 4 feet. It should be enough for you to comftorably manuever around and cook in.
