Because on August 14, the Giants were 13 1/2 games behind the Dodgers and managed to catch them on the last day of the season (Dodgers went 26-22 during that stretch, while the Giants went 37-7 over their last 44), forcing a three-game playoff, which Thompson's homer clinched for the Giants. Given that the two teams were basically miles apart, it was a huge deal for the Giants to catch and beat the crosstown Dodgers.

Korean War was going on at the time and so the shot was heard on the radio "Round the World"! Servicemen listened on radios.
It was not high attendance at the game and it wasn't that big of a deal really. Not a lot of people were listening to the game from my understanding.

The Giants came back from being 13 1/2 games down in the regular season, forcing a 3 game tie breaker series. The Dodgers were up 4-2 in the ninth inning of the series- and season-clinching third game when Bobby Thompson hit a three-run homer to win it for the Giants.
It was drama upon drama upon drama.
