Ever since the years of Franklin D. Roosevelt the democratic party has been the champion for social welfare. The democratic party is geared toward the "common man" and seeks to improve the quality of life for the individual.Usually by giving monies, tax breaks, health programs directly to the people to help stir the economy.
The republican party is geared toward improving that the rich
(especially corporations) get richer and usually at the expense of the "common man" by incorporating a policy of giving excess money to businesses and having it "trickle" down to the people provided the companies don't use the incentives to bloat their bottom line instead.
Democrats tend to lean toward individuality and the do whatever makes you happy ideology.Republicans tend to lean more toward moral precepts based on christian ideology.
Many exceptions can be found regarding the above statements, however the general ideas remain valid. That is why today more people are adopting a middle of the road ideology encompassing factors from each parties ideals.
You have asked a very important question that many adults never consider.Hope this helps, and good luck

Believe it or not they are not that different.
They each represent special interest groups. These are groups who have an interest in seeing laws passed, like Big Tobacco, or the ACLU.
Most people don't fit 100% into either category of ideologies.
You won't either.
Neither party is evil, but either party would destroy the country if they had complete control.
Stand on issues, and not on party lines.
Make sure that a party represents you
instead of a party dictating to you what to represent.

I think it is great that you are interested at such a young age. Here are some links that will help you understand the basic beliefs of each party:

http://www.democrats.org/agenda.html Democrats
http://www.gop.com/media/2004platform.pdf Republicans

I tried to find a shorter one for the GOP, but no dice. It seems they have the inability to be succinct and to the point. :-) But, since I am a Democrat, I could be biased. ;-)

Actually I think Brooklyn has it backwards. Republicans believe that protecting and maintaining the institutional framework of the country is the role of the government, and that individuals will benefit from that and from their own efforts. Democrats believe that the government should do more to protect and assist the individual, and that institutions and businesses will benefit from that and from their own efforts.

Well, I'd say that the Democrats are the lesser of two evils. There's a lot of things I don't like about the Democrats, but at the same time they actually appear to have some concern for other human beings. Republicans, well I have nothing good to say about them anymore, not after the administration of George W. Bush.

Democrats somehow don't like killing innocent women and children so Exxon CEO could buy expensive houses in Europe

Republicans somehow like watching pro-wrestling and Fox News

there really isn't much difference.

there are demographics such as the radical christian right the almost exclusively adhere to party lines, but to be perfectly honest, i couldn't come up with three real topics that define either party.

Republicans think that people are basically bad but if left by the Govt. alone they'll be alright
democrats believe that men are basically bad but with Govt. intervention all will be well

in layman's terms, the Democrat's ideology is based off of emotion and they look more at the problem's of the country and see how to fix it. the Republican's are more logic based and look at what's right with our country and tend to stick with the status quo.

and you're being fourteen doesn't mean anything. you could know tons of things...just look around and feel free to ask your parents about politics. i'm sure that they'll be glad to tell you.
