You crack two windows, one behind the cooler (if you have the portable kind of cooler) and one across the room or across the house to make a cross draft. The opening should be 2 to 6 inches, but it'll vary depending on how warm it is and some other things. You'll just have to experiment with it. We use three small portable coolers and keep a 1300 sf house pretty cool with them. They're great -- save energy and don't dry out our sinuses the way air conditioning does.

A swamp cooler, in hot dry climates, if it is large enough and mounted on the roof AND ducted in [i.e., vents in each room] can do a pretty fair job. Cracking windows in the rooms you want the most cooling in is the most effective...like when you go to bed, crack the windows a couple of inches in the bedroom and close any windows elsewhere. This will cause the cool airflow to seek out that opening--like a draft mechanism, perhaps--and that room will receive the most effective cooling. In daytime or before bedtime, crack open windows a little bit on opposing sides of the house--to keep it all flowing as many places as possible. I've lived with daytime summer temperatures of 105-115, and a big roof swamp-cooler kept us comfortable. Cheaper than A/C for sure.

A regular swamp cooler doesn't have the capacity to cool every room in a regular house but you can crack a window or door in the rooms you would like cooler and it will help a bit.
You don't have to open them much. Just enought to permit air flow.

You only need to keep one window open and it doesn't really matter how open as long as air can circulate. If you're worried about someone climbing in it, use a window that's not easy to get into. It's easier to use the swamp cooler in some ways because as long as there's a door opened then there's no worry about keeping windows or doors open for too long and it's very good cool air.

Yes, you may need to crack the windows in each room to let the airflow circulate. You will need to experiment with how wide to open each window if you do several rooms, the air pressure will seek the easiest route. Another option, which we did when I was a kid, was to put box fans or any other type of floor fan in doorways. There are also some decent air circulators (really powerful fans) that work well, use one in my 2500 sq ft house in the am, really pulls the air through the whole house while it is cool.

Be sure the cooler is installed on the hot side of the house. Only open a window on the opposite end or the room that needs the most cooling.
