I agree entirely with you, but your arguments aren't implemented in the best way.
I feel that rock takes more than just rhythmic talent. Rap only contains rhythmic talking, and while I like that, it doesn't appeal to me by itself. Rock includes more than just talking, it has singing of actual notes, as well as many other professions that are part of it.
What about guitarists, bassists, keyboarders, drummers, and everyone else that plays in rock? That's a whole different level; Rock takes combined talent, Rap takes one person, their level of talent I wont go into.
Some bands have combined the two, namely Rage Against The Machine, Beastie Boys, and I love it.
More proof is poised by this simple question: Why do rap songs so often use old Rock, Classical or Jazz music in their songs? How can rappers possibly insult these genres when so many rap songs have the genres right in them, copied directly. Rap depends on different genres, which is proof that it takes less talent.
I not only enjoy Rock, but almost every genre, with the exception of Rap and Country, obviously with exceptions. I feel that both aren't really their own style, they both involve a lot of pretending to be what they're not. They are just combinations and variations of previous types of music, combined with a certain type of lifestyle, namely the "gangster" lifestyle for rap, and the "western" lifestyle for country. Rock, classical, techno, jazz, and others are more independent of a certain culture.
Rock forever!

I like rock better than rap, yes, but you're being way too ignorant.
There is plenty of rock that is mindless with crappy lyrics, such as Nickelback, where you can always tell what the next line is before they say it because their music is so predictable.
Then there is plenty of rap that is really intelligent, such as Saul Williams or Immortal Technique, that talks about interesting ideas and such.
Unfortunately, it's the mindless stuff that becomes popular in the rap genre. And, compared to what's popular and all the other rock, it often is the same for the rock genre too.
You have to look past the mainstream if you want to REALLY compare music genres, and you apparently didn't do that, did you?

If you want to hate on Rap that's cool...it's your choice. As a rule I don't like country music...but there are a small number of country songs I enjoy. Same for classical, opera, speed metal, trance, techno and lots of other styles.
And...if I said all rock music was made by stupid guys who wear clothes that are embarrassingly too tight...and way out of style... and sing only about getting wasted and/or skanky women (w/ the same poor taste in fashion)...and that the songs were almost always built around the same exact scales...and rhythm patterns...and the same 3 or 4 chords played over and over and over again...would you say that was accurate, or would you say that's overly simplified??
The funny thing about your hating rap so much... is that the biggest changes that have taken place in the rock music genre...in the last 25 years...are a direct result of the influence of Rap and Hip Hop.
If it's only "talent" ...or the about "complexity"...or the "length" or the "interesting" guitar solos...should I assume that you and the other rap haters here love Wes Montgomery and think Django Reinhardt is a god??
Because I assure you either of these gentleman can play circles around almost any rock guitarist you can name...past or present! I've played guitar for a long, long time...and I LOVE rock music...but accomplished jazz guitarists can play everything the most accomplished rock players can play...and entire other levels of music that the rock players can't touch.... because rock guitarists spend all their time practicing and playing the same exact scales...over the same rhythm patterns...and with the same 3 or 4 chords over and over and over again.
If you hate it...so be it...but if you truly like music, why close yourself off to a whole section of it. Just like rock...there is good rap and bad rap.
Expand your influences!!

Um, its not. You don't need to criticize rap though, you hate it so what? We actually care about what you think? Its like me saying rock is a bunch of guys who keep screaming their heads off and can't keep a tone in right? Rap is music, it tells a story. Rock? its just ugly metal. Rap takes talent too, lets see you rap. No question, this is why rock is so pathetic, it shows how stupid rock listeners like you talk and act about other music.
Thanks for the points rocker. =)

I in basic terms hear to rock and metallic. I hate rap. i don't comprehend . . . there is purely one thing deeper approximately rock. maximum metalheads appreciate the darker facet of existence, however, so it relies upon on your character. i do in contrast to rap, yet that does no longer mean that there is a few thing incorrect with it. song is an expression.

Yours is an opinion. I'm a blues-rock guitarist, and I have a new opinion on rap and hip-hop: it IS rock! Its just a rock style that you don't like. Thrash speed death metal is rock too, but I'm just not a big fan of it. I can see why you don't like rap, but that doesn't mean that it is any better or worse than any other kind of music - it just means that you don't like it. In rap music the melody is usually in the bass line, and the words are part of the percussion.

I see what you're getting at here, and I agree with you for the most part...but rap lyrics, however crappy the song is, can still be deep and chilling. Try listening to "Dance with the Devil" by Immortal Technique, and see if you can become a little less close-minded. Hearing that song caused legit nightmares for me for days.

If that's what rap is to you, than why do you care about comparing the two genres of music. There should be no question. Personally, I like rap music.
