The hype comes from 7 being considered a lucky number which has ancient roots and is a whole answere in itself. But besides that another interesting point is that 7-7-07 only comes about once every 1000 years.

1. People who are attracted by design and thus the symmetry of 7/7/7 or...
2. People who are superstitious and think 7 is a lucky number and that all of those together, which won't happen again for a good long time, is extra lucky.
3. Because of the previous two, it's all about sales.

This is the only day with three 7s in it until 7-7-77, and since the number 7 is supposed to be 'lucky' people think this day will be 'lucky' for them ... and many are getting married today, because the think their marriages will be 'lucky' ...
I don't think that any number is 'particularly lucky' ... but you asked what the 'hype' was about this day, and I told you ... I think it's 'bunk,' myself ...
I really like the date 7-8-7, myself ... that is the day Boeing will show the first 787 plane to the world.

Superstition:
7 = lucky number
777 = 3x the lucky number, ALSO when you play slot machine 777 and you win big.
"The number 7 is equally sacred amongst Islamic, Christian and Jewish religions. According to Jewish and Christian mythologies it took six days to create the world with the seventh day being the holiest day - a day of rest. The Bible, Zohar and other religious texts also recommend that fields were to be left fallow every seventh year as means of allowing the earth to regenerate itself. Some Christians believe the number 7 represents the seven levels of hell."

Just superstitious hype. You've got to love all these people flocking to the casinos or buying their lottery tickets today. If 7-7-7 was lucky, doesn't that mean that everyone in the casino would have good luck or that the lottery would just be split amongst all those millions of lucky people?
People will believe anything!

At precisely 07:07:07 A.M on 7/7/07 all sevens lined up. It lines up like that every seventh year of every century. 1707, 1807, 1907 and now, 2007, 2107, 2207, etc. There will always be a 7/7/07 at 7:07:07 a.m.

People associate 777 with being a lucky number of sorts. It is a religious reference, and there are many things that are grouped in 7's, ie: seven world wonders, seven continents, seven days of the week, ect.

The significance of the number 777 (the holy number). It's supposed to be the number of God. As in last year we had the devil's number of 666 (June 6th, 2006).
