War Costs Soar by a Third; Total Could Top $1.4 Trillion
It’s not just the troops that are surging. War costs are up for American operations in Iraq and Afghanistan more than a third higher than last year. In the first half of this fiscal year, the Defense Depart.'s "average monthly obligations for contracts and pay is running about $12 billion per month, well above the $8.7 billion in FY2006," says a new report, from the non-partisan Congressional Research Service.
Additional war costs for the next 10 years could total about $472 billion if troop levels fall to 30,000 by 2010, or $919 billion if troop levels fall to 70,000 by about 2013. If these estimates are added to already appropriated amounts, total funding about $980 billion to $1.4 trillion by 2017. Meanwhile, Inside Defense reports that "top Pentagon budget and program officials have directed the military services to prepare spending proposals to finance Iraq and Afghanistan operations. ... through fiscal year 2009, which will span the last days of the Bush administration and the early months of the next administration."

of course, few can even fathom a trillion dollars or even a billion.
Looks like the US will be in debt for centuries.

Ken. Social Security is NOT broke. The government has been borrowing from SS for decades silly. Government is unable to pay back what they 'borrowed' or outright took! Why do you think Bush wanted a new system? To help YOU? Hell no. To get the government out from under. USE your brain. Borrow a calculator. Estimate nbr of people paying into SS every week, month, year. Billions. If govt had any sense, monies would go into annuities. PLUS there are billions in SS that have been paid for decades (and continue to be paid)into a special government fund by "illegals" who use SS numbers not belonging to them. Yes illegals can collect now as of a few years ago. But millions will never collect. and millions have died without ever collecting over the past several decades.
Ask your congressmen/woman where these funds are? Get smart.

WE are NOT at war.
George Bush and his neocons are.
You forget, Georgieboy invaded and occupied because HE wanted to. Then he told those who were dumb enough to believe him that we were bringing "liberty, freedom and democracy" to those people
and you swallowed it.
Well tell me silly. Since when has a white man wanted to bring "liberty, freedom and democracy to BROWN people.
Now he and his neocons can't figure out a way to get out of the mess HE put us in without killing hundreds of millions of those people he wanted to bring "liberty, freedom and democracy to, not to mention the thousands of US troops who have died for nothing.
That's right. Nothing.
God people are gullible!
Remember that.

excuse error. I meant hundreds of
THOUSANDS
as far as the Iraqis are concerned.
I know they only number about 24,000,000
(minus the hundreds of THOUSANDS who have
died in this pathetic war effort.

This is what I've been saying! Thank you for giving it more detail then I have. The cost of this will go far into the generations. Just the health care for the veterns will be costly. They deserve the best after the hell they've been put through. It's beyond stupid.

It's funny how libs hate the idea of funding the war, but are willing to force the rest of us to pay into Social Security with no hope of a return on our investment. Not to mention that all of your figures involve speculation about how long we'll be there, but we'll ignore that for now. Why should I (as a Kid and Grandkid) be paying for my Grandfather's mistake in trusting the govt. and Social Security?

We are at war and it costs money to defend this country every day. We need to fight and fund this war or my kids and grand kids may be sacrificing more than just their wallets.
