JELD-WEN purchased several decent window manufacturers several years ago. They converted some plants, closed others. In the process, it looks like they kept the least expensive designs, the results were not good. I would not consider them.

Pella makes some windows that are good, some that are not so good. It is difficult to determine exactly what you are buying until you have it in your hands. Not sure how they do on service issues.

Marvin makes wonderful windows. They do have different product lines, but it is pretty easy to understand what you are dealing with. Service is great in some areas, horrible to non-existent in others. Depends upon the dealer. They do tend to require a bit of service either during or shortly after installation, so this is important. I would use them if there was something special that other manufacturers can't or won't do.

Andersen also makes several product lines. Each serves a different market, but they are all a good value for the price. Service is great and they have a good track record with honoring their warranty. You can still get parts for Andersen windows that have not been manufactured since the 1960s.

Obviously, Andersen would be my first choice. If you are looking for double hungs, be sure you look at the relatively new Woodwright window. On the higher end price wise, but a really good design.

Another choice worth looking into is Anderson Fine Windows and Doors. Their manufactering plant is in Northern Ontario - Sundridge. I researched numerous Wooden Window Manufacturers (Cedar). They had the best track record and good quality for the money. They also manufacture pine and pvc units. I installed 9 medium to large thermal insulated casement units over 25 years ago. Had to replace one thermal unit - was hit by a rock and cracked and one casement was hit by a falling branch - cracked the window operating casement frame. Both failures were due external causes which would have damage any window regardless of manufacture.

There are many types of windows:

Alum, Vinyl, fiberglass, wood, clad/wood (In order of least expensive to most expensive usually and in order of least maintenance to most maintenance)

Also Each company makes a good better best type window. The best ones cost you more but come with more features.

It is important to know which company has a long warranty. For most all of them come with free long time warranties. And you really need this because all window companies make defects. Almost every home has a defect in at least one of their windows. And it can be costly to fix.

My favorite is vinyl windows. For a fair cost and for low maintenance. The windows are very similar among all companies. Not one is better than the other. You do get better service from company to company.

Just because a window company has a big name recognition does not make them better. It simply means they spend more on advertisement and/or have been around longer.

I prefer Milgard windows and doors.
