If you can't lift yourself off the ground, don't. Set the bar so that with your arms extended and your feet on the floor, your knees are bent. Use your legs to help -- lots at first, and less as you build strength. one day you'll be able to raise the bar and lift off the ground.

You could use a gym machine and do lat pulls, but if you don't have access to a machine, this will work fine.

And don't laugh at yourself. You are taking the actions you need to, to improve your strength. Give yourself some credit.

Keep at it, and Good luck!

In the gym, they often have pull-up machines with a counter weight. You could pull up as little as 1/8 of your body weight, and just keep increasing month after month as you get stronger. With these machines, you kneel on the pad, put your hands on the pull up grips, and start lifting yourself.

Another solution I have used is have a friend just cup his hands under your feet and give you a gentle boost. You can probably lift most of your weight already, and just need a little extra help.
