I am going to order a Dell Inspiron 1420 soon, and I am not sure what screen to get. Both anti-glare and glossy screen options are available for no additional price. The Glossy seems like it would be good for movies and such, but anti-glare would be good for outside or in a sunny room. The glossy will delay the shipment by about a week. What do you think.

Well I know this sounds simple but you have pretty much answered your own question. The Glossy is better for situations when you have normal lighting, and would be good for movies like you said. The anti-glare would be better for lighting conditions with a lot of glare, such as being outside or in a sunny room. So basically, which of those situations will you be using your laptop the most in, and once you figure that out you will have your answer.

It's all preference and depends on if you will be working in bright backlighting or a dark room. One of the notable differences I can see is that a glossy screen will require more cleaning. Dust, fingerprints, or other factors would probably be more noticed on a glossy screen than on an anti-glare one.

Movies look fine on the anti-glare screens. I'd say go anti-glare and get your computer faster!

It doesn't really matter. Its mostly about preference. The finish does not completely determine the picture quality of the display. It only affects the viewers eyes. For most people who types out documents or do similar stuffs that require a clear view on any angle, a anti gloss screens is would be there choice. Glossy displays generate slight increase of saturated colors, deeper blacks, brighter whites, and sharper images. This makes these types of displays more appropriate for general public use, which commonly uses laptops for viewing photos, watching movies, or browsing the web. This may sound good but the major con is that only best suited in dark or dim lighted rooms. Taking it outside or rooms that has lots of lights (especially florescent lights) can have a opposite affect of picture quality.

I actually prefer the glossy screens. Go to a computer store and play with them to see which you prefer.
