Power, and the tokens of power - money. That's all it is. The ability to be able to do whatever the hell you want at the expense of everyone else. Sure - on the surface wars may be about religion, who is the right choice for a "democratic" country or whatever - but it all boils down to how much money can be made, how many people can be extorted and how your own country/race/religion/culture can be shamelessly promoted and forced on others.
Wars are not fought for freedom (unless you're defending from an agressor of course) - you cannot bring freedom by the sword. You CAN bring forced foreign investment, monopolies on resources and of course make a lot of money rebuilding the country you destroyed, not to mention selling weapons to EVERYONE.

We have war because most people do not have the ability to reason. If people are unreasonable and insist on attacking others, force must be used to stop them.
