Just curious my cousin plays bass

Bass amps are designed to handle the frequencies of the bass guitar. Guitar amps are designed to handle the frequencies of the guitar, which is much higher. Some guitar players use old vacuum tube bass guitar amps for their guitars, but if you run a bass through a guitar without a "limiter" in front of it you could possibly wreck the amplifier. I play both bass and guitar (mostly guitar). You can do it, but you shouldn't - it usually doesn't sound right and can destroy the amplifier.

Yes...you need a bass amp to play a bass guitar.

you can use a regular guitar amp, but keep the volume REALLY low or you will blow anything but a heavy magnet high quality 12" woofer.(15" is even better) Bass guitars produces the very low frequencies, and need large speakers and lots of power to reproduce those low long wave sounds at the "bottom" of the frequency spectrum.

Any amp will amplify, a bass amp has a countour suited for bass.
