After watching David Wells get ejected way early, today i think umpires should be fined for doing stuff like this. It would be one thing if it was a coach, but he ejected the starting pitcher!

The umpires job is to make correct calls and keep players in the game, and i feel that umpires are using their power to eject players, for more personal reasons (like, ha i was right)

Do you agree that umpires should be fined for ejecting a player when not necessary?

Yes. Everyone else in a baseball stadium is held accountable for what they do, except for umpires. If players start sucking, they get demoted to AAA. If the team isnt winning, the manager gets fired. If the field looks like crap everyday, the grounds crew would be replaced, but umpires can be terrible and they're never punished. I remember when they were whining about more money, and a pitcher threw a perfect pitch right down the middle and the umpire called it a ball - just because. And it's like this in all sports.

There are some cases where I think discipline of umpires would be considered appropriate. Many of today's umpires eject people over their own little personal power trip, rather than the ejection be for something that the player truly deserves to be ejected for.

It won't happen, though, as MLB (along with all other pro sports leagues) stands behind their officials no matter what -- they can do no wrong.

Memo to those pro sports leagues -- your officials are human, and make mistakes just like anyone else. The only ones you are fooling is yourself.

That's a ridiculous Q! As has been said here many times, umpires are only human & humans make mistakes. How would you like it if you every mistake in life were penalized? Of course any perceived cheating should be dealt with, but I have yet to see that occur on the cricket field, no matter what Mr Greene/100 other IDs says.

Premature ejecting is ok as long as the ump wears protection! Must be an immature 10 year old asking this stupid question!

No. In order to do their jobs, umpires need to be free from daily sanction. If one does a poor job, MLB can dump him at the end of the season or "recommend" that his resignation letter show up on Bud's desk next Monday. But if an ump has to think "I should thumb Wells, but it might cost me" then he's already made the wrong decision. Baseball doesn't need that.

No, it would be like a Judge going to jail when or if they make a boo-boo. It doesn't happen in real life, it doesn't happen in baseball.
Players can appeal , that would be fun. To get ejected from a baseball game you gotta be acting pretty stoopid.

No! David Wells should have taken a smoke break rather than blowing up. Arguing balls and strikes is a no-no and it will get you tossed.

Wells also said something really foul that can't be repeated.
