Hi, I think what you are referring to is the 7" 45s that fit in a jukebox. The spindle in a jukebox is far thicker than a normal domestic record turntable & you can buy adapter pieces to fit these ex-jukebox 45s. In addition during the heyday of vinyl many manufacturers produced 45s with push-out middles for home or jukebox playing.

As you don't usually find jukeboxes capable of playing 12" 33rpm records they are manufactured with solid centres.

Because the 45 rpm record is normally about 2 to 3 minutes and the LP 33 rpm has more songs and therefore minutes of playing time. You don't need that much vinyl for 2 or 3 minute recording.

45s were made for jukeboxes and needed a bigger margin of error to be able to be auto-mated.

the reason for that is so you can do the man thing and store them onto your johnson without it drooping. the norm is about 30 each.

probably just another way to tell them apart besides size
