Is it illegal to teach someone how to back their own DVD's and provide them with the free software. I just don't want to be liable for my friends actions. Thanks

Nope! Unless he does something illegal with that knowledge and you knew what his intentions were when you showed him. Then you may be held liable.

Making a backup copy of a DVD you legally own is not illegal. Teaching someone how to do something that is legal is not illegal. If you have reason to believe the person will use the knowledge for illegal purposes, such as pirating DVDs, you could be considered an accessory. You are only responsible for your friends actions if you provide assistance with reason to believe it will result in illegal activity.

No. What you teach cannot be held against you as long as you can cover your ***...ets. Perhaps have hims swear in front of witnesses that you are not liable for his actions and that you do not condone or in any way promote the actions of replicating any material for purposes of distribution. It should be understood that any material is copyrighted and that if he or she will make us of the this knowledge you would impart, it must be for personal use only and not be displayed outside of the persons home or domicile and that it is never to be exchanged to any one for any reason without the express or written consent of the individual or organization to which it belongs.

There, now that sounds all nice and technical, doesn't it? Well, then, say do as I instruct and you not only seem responsible, but your ***...ets will be fine, too.

Cool!

I dont think so, as long as they are not copywriting anything that should not be done. or reselling the disks as their own work.
