I work at a restaurant and its frustrating that you can have 200 people love everything and you will have 1 person come in and complain about everything and try to make you feel horrible. It seems that some people like to complain, what makes them that way?

some people are just born that way, some people are having a bad day and some people are more vocal - just b/c 200 ppl didn't say anything doesn't mean they loved it...and just b/c 200 ppl did get what they want and loved it doesn't mean it will work out for customer 201...
just don't take it personally unless you really screwed up...

Some people do it because they are unhappy about other things, some do it because they are trying to get something out of you, and once in awhile, someone may have a genuinely bad experience in the restaurant.
I find it really surprising that you say out of every 201 people, only one complains. Be patient, if your experience is really that good, you will learn to deal with it and focus on the good experiences. I've never worked in a restaurant, but I've worked in retail all my life and found that eventually I built up a repertoire of effective responses to repeated situations that may arise that prevent me from becoming emotionally involved and from building up stress over other peoples' problems.

It is good when you find these people and they are genuine. They had a bad day, they do not have a life, nobody loves them, etc. Beware of the professional complainers their only mission in life is to put people down in order to have some money off their bills. it is pathetic to see their faces when some money is written off which amount does not really deserve their effort.

They can't help it ... maybe it's some type of ailment. Alcoholics have to admit that they're alcoholics before they're ready to be treated. Possibly a Complainers Anonymous would be a good idea. Someone has beaten me to it ... see the link for the Chronic Complainers Anonymous.

Some people just aren't happy unless they are unhappy. Those are the people that will find something to complain about in every situation and every place. It is because they are so miserable, they want every one to feel the way that they do, or least let every one know how miserable they are.

well, my brother always complains and I would say he complains, because he doesn't want to say that others were right with what they did.
If he eats something, and everybody likes it, he says its horrible. later I find him eating it secretly. so I would guess he has to much self-pride. or maybe he is just bored with life and has nothing else to do.
He just doesn't realize that others have it worse than him.

Some people can't be happy if they tried. They want to rag on other because they have nothing better to do. They put the hore in horrible(^_^)

I have a patron who used to do this all the time and then if we made changes of our on accord she would give herself the credit. We decided that she needs to get laid.

some people are born complainers! You will have them every now and then, nothing pleases them, you just have to over look them, if you can! Spit in their soup when they arent looking!! {just kidding!}
