I work with temporary agents for catering in London. What Im asking is if theres some union or some organisation that will help if there are problems with not getting paid properly or health & safety issues etc.

There's alot of agents abusing their staff & particularly travellers from other countries. They dont know who they can trust & who to get advice from when pay day comes. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I agree agencies treat their staff badly and so do companies who use agency staff, think they can treat them anyway they like. I once worked for a catering agency who sent me to a conference. I was busy serving some deligates when their own catering boss came over to me and flew into a rage while I was serving my clients, who I apologised to. I took the catering manager to the office ant told him in no uncertain terms. Never to shout at me again in front of clients. It was not my job to sort out the problem of catering equipment and if he had anything to say to me he should have taken me to an office.I said I may be agency staff but I know my job. He did not like me telling him and told me to leave. I said to him don't worry I am going and I certainly would never come and work here again. I had been there already for 6 hours I had travelled for 1 and a half hours. I was paid £8 after tax . I would never be abused like this again.

I am surprised! If you are living in the UK, try to contact your local MP- the surest way of dealing with these 'agencies'. There is an office called the Office of Fair Trading and they will certainly render positive advice. Then there is your trade union- if your a member they are obliged to advise and help. Please do not be discouraged, take the help from your local Citizens advice bureau and they wont let you down. Good luck

I'm sure there is a government agency that deals with rights of employees, but as a US resident, I don't know the name of the agency. As for unions, the usually only assist members of the union. I suspect you would know if you had joined a union, if for no other reason than you would be paying union dues.
