Neverwhere by Neil Gaimon is good, it's set in an alternate London. There's a girl called Door, an angel, and two well crafted demonic hit men among other things. There is a hapless hero as well. Also: Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. by Neil Gaimon and Terry Pratchett. I've connected a link to a plot summary on Wikipedia. I loved this book.

Breathing Paris by Erin Headley is a great romantic book. Everyone I know who has read it has liked it. The characters are very easy to relate to and it is very difficult to put down. I highly recommend it. You can visit www.erinheadley.com for more info.

The most fun for your buck: Fight Club. It's got a twisted romance story and the narrative is one of the most engaging I've read in years.
