I agree with the other people: Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows are sad books.

Others:
Of Mice and Men
Sounder
Speak
So B. It

I can't think of any more but there are a LOT of depressing books in the world!

Movies - Gone With the Wind, Steel Magnolias, Glory, Terms of Endearment, Edward Scissorhands, The Notebook, and surprisingly, Click (yes, the one with Adam Sandler. I was bawling while watching it on an airplane.)

Books - Kite Runner, To Kill a Mockingbird, Charlotte's Web

The saddest book that I have ever read was "A child called it" It is a trilogy I guess. Its a true story about boy who was beaten and abuse physically and mentally by his mother. I wanted to cry several times reading the first one.

When I was a kid, I read Old Yeller. I cried thru the entire last chapter of the book. To this day, I refuse to see the Disney movie Old Yeller.

Letting Go of Lisa by Lurlene McDaniel and Sharing Sam by Katherine Applegate. Their very awesome books, and it's the endings that might make you shed a tear. :)
