You don't need any software if you use windows xp or vista. Just install the router as follows:
1. Connect the 'Uplink' port on your wireless router to your modem(or whatever) just like you'd connect your PC to your modem. The uplink port is well distinguished from the other down-link ports (usually 4).
2. Connect the PC to any one of the down-link ports just like you connect your PC to the modem. Thus you got the router in-between your PC and modem. Here by modem I mean the device given by your internet provider, it could be a hub, switch, router, dsl-modem, or a regular-modem.
3. Power down everything, then power them back up in this order - Modem, Wireless router, PC. Wait 1-2 minute between each step.
4. Your internet should be working. If not you need help from a techie. It would be out-of-scope trying to explain all the solutions here.
5. If the internet worked in last step, just disconnect the PC from the wireless-router, because that should be wireless.
6. Insert the wireless-card or wifi-usb-adabter in your laptop. if your laptop has in-build wireless, enable it.
7. Windows will help you connect to your wireless network, you might need to double-click an icon near the clock that looks like a computer monitor with waves coming out of it. it may have a red-cross on it if windows could not connect automatically. Wait a couple minutes before you do anything because windows might be just taking time. If not the screen that appear on double-clicking the icon should be able to help you connect.
Please note: This procedure is to get you going and not the recommended solution. Here we haven't done anything to secure your wi-fi or to name it for easy identification. The software that came with your router can probably help you do that. Or you can do that by visiting the settings page mentioned underneath the router usually http://192.168.0.1. This should be done between point 4 and 5.

You'll need a copy of an install CD from SOMEBODY, as it has a little piece of software that manages and checks the connection between your computer and the internet. However, since it's not particularly tied by serial number to one router and one computer (generic) you can snag a copy from any pal who has a Linksys router. Fetch it, and installing will be a breeze - 15 minutes, max! Once you unplug everything, then load the CD and follow on-screen instructions, pop, yer up. Also, the Linksys support folks are friendly, patient, competent. You can count on them. Before you call, read that little tiny serial number on the bottom of the router and have it at hand.

Hi. In 'Control Panel' there is a network setup wizard. Try that and it will walk you through.
