Fill the 7 gallon bucket.

Fill the 3-gallon bucket twice from the 7-gallon bucket. That leaves 7 - 3 - 3 = 1 gallon in the 7-gallon bucket.

Dump the 3-gallon bucket again, and pour the 1 gallon into it.

Fill the 7-gallon bucket a second time.

Fill the 3 gallon bucket the rest of the way from the 7-gallon bucket. Since the 3-gallon bucket contained 1 gallon previously, it takes 2 more gallons to fill it.

That leaves the 7 gallon bucket with 7 - 2 = 5 gallons.

Fill the one of 3 gallons. Pour it in the 7 gallon bucket. Fill the 3 gallonbucket again and pour it again in the 7 gallon bucket. Fill it a third time and fill the 7gallon bucket to the top. This leaves you with 2 gallons in the 3 gallon bucket. Empty the 7 gallon bucket. Pour in the 2 gallons of water of the 3 gallon bucket. Fill the 3 gallon bucket again and pour the 3 gallons of water. There, you now have a 7 gallon bucket with 5 gallons of water in it ;)

the simplest way would be to buy a 5 gallon bucket and fill that.

or if u want to use yr 2 buckets get 4 gallons twice by emptying the 7 gallon one with the 3. and now that u have 8 gallons remove 3 to get 5

1st step: Fill 7 gallon bucket completely with water.

2nd step: Fill 3 gallon bucket completely with water from 7 gallon bucket. Now, 4 gallons are left in 7 gallon bucket.

3rd step: Empty the 3 gallon bucket.

4th step: Fill 3 gallon bucket again, completely, with water from 7 gallon bucket (which now contains 4 gallons). Now, 1 gallon is left in 7 gallon bucket.

5th step: Empty again the 3 gallon bucket.

6th step: Fill 3 gallon bucket with water from 7 gallon bucket (which now contains 1 gallon). Now, 1 gallon is present inside 3 gallon bucket and it has 2 gallon empty space.

7th step: Again fill the 7 gallon bucket.

8th step: Fill 3 gallon bucket completely with water from 7 gallon bucket (which now contains 7 gallons). Now, 5 gallons are left in 7 gallon bucket as 2 gallons has been poured into the empty space of 3 gallon bucket.
