Gay marriages ARE currently, legal in New Jersey and in Massachusetts in the USA. They are also legal in Belgium, Spain and Toronto, Canada. Did you mean anywhere else in the world before a specific date? If that is what you meant, then it was probably because no one supported them in large enough numbers to legalize them in some other places or there was too much opposition to them.

There are several reasons for that.
For one, it is only in the last two hundred years or so that actual 'marriages' even began to become more common. (Hence the prevalence of commonlaw marriage provisions in the laws of most US states, dating back to the start of the nation.)
Going back further, into older societies. there often simply wasn't considered a the need to differentiate. A life together was a life together. It was more recently that we began to categorize.

Not to mention the Theban Sacred Band, made up of three hundred gay couples, the idea being that if they were married and fought together, they'd be hard fighters. They were.
Surprise shocker for the haters... even the Vikings had no problem with same sex coupling.

You should definitely do research before you ask a question like this. Canada allowed it's first same-sex marriage in 1972; and they were the fourth country to allow same-sex marriages. So it is not only recently that same-sex marriages were legal, it has been centuries in some countries.

First off, they are legal in parts of the United States and Mexico. This shows that the world is slowly coming around to the fact that two concenting adults in love can marry with no ill effect in society.

It was accepted in many cultures. The word 'Marriage' is a recent term in history.
In Native America it was accepted. In early Greece and Rome (until Christianity spread) it was accepted. Religion has pushed homosexuality underground over the last 2 thousand years. We are slowly but surely pulling ourselves out of the quagmire

They were. In Sparta. They figured that if male lovers fought in the same regiment, they'd fight harder to impress their partner. It worked well; Sparta had the strongest army in ancient Greece.
