Well the first guy was almost right, very few applications are multi-threaded, unfortunately one of the few that is multithreded is.....Auto CAD (not the entire program, but certain parts).

That said, you should probably be looking for a a quad core if you can afford it, but make sure you take care of the other parts as well, plenty of RAM and plenty of hard drive space.

The current dual cores from Intel are better than the current dual cores from AMD (Core 2 Duo vs. Athlon 64 X2) so either way, dual or quad core you should be sticking with Intel right now. AMD will have new processors out later this year, so things could change by then.

As for Vista, you will experience a few bumps in the road since it is a new OS, but overall it will not be a major problem.

Well theres no such thing as too fast of a processor but yes the hd speed and cache not to mention your ram will influence how fast CAD stuff will load...the quad core would be a very good investment for the future because the 64X2's are going to be phased out when amd releases their quad cores soon

Vista is....meh....its eats ram like no other...you should maybe even get 4 gigs

Again...vista would probably be a good investment for the future because msft will eventually phase out xp too in the near future...but be sure if you get vista be prepared to have issues and keep an xp machine around or dual boot

The quad core has no benefits right now as no software is written for it yet, however technically in the future it could be a more powerful chip, however I still prefer and use myself and AMD X2 processor and have had great luck. As for auto cad, I recommend plenty of ram and a fast hard drive (7200rpm or greater) with a 16mb cache, as that will also help with load times and just using cad in general.

Lastly, as for vista, it is an okay OS, however for cad there are still alot of compatibility issues. I personally run both XP and Vista, however I tend to use XP more often as it is more functional with most programs.

Hope this helps!

if you can afford it, go with the quad, it will be very useful in the future when multithreaded applications get better support. Especially ones in CAD/CAM programs and even moreso in the audio visual fields. Vista will run smootly on any system with more than 2 gigs of ram and a decent video card including the professional cards like the Quadro and the FireGLs...
