Peanut butter?

Question

What happens to my peanut butter when i add water to the pot and let it rest? It smells so awful after a while, I almost died in the kitchen from breathing it.

Um ok it's a jar not a pot.

I mean what kind of reactions are chemically possible between water and peanut butter?

Is that what they call "a rancid fat"?

I think you probably have encoutered the phenomenom called "decay" Peanuts are grown in soil and typically are loaded with bacteria and molds. They don't typically decay quickly because of their low moisture content.

You've gave the microorganisms the moisture they need by soaking them in water.

Peanut butter has very low water content, and also has added salt to keep it from decaying.

You didn't eat you homemade "peanut butter" did you? It probably could make you sick!

That's how you make napalm... You'll probably die. Okay, I was being sarcastic, I have no idea why that happened. Maybe...(and this is just a wild guess) a cat crawled into your house while you were out of the room dragging a dead creature of some sort that reeked like no other. You entered the room and found it to smell uninviting, gazed around and deducted that it HAD to be the peanut butter, so you blamed the poor peanuts who really did nothing and while you were dumping out the mixture, the cat snuck back in and removed the dead animal therefor eliminating the smell. That must be it, don't you think?

i don't think it's as much of a chemical reaction but rather a colony of bacteria (or mold) started multiplying
