intel makes the pentium processor. the best would be the intel core 2 duo processor, it has 2 cores.

The best possible Processor on the Market is made by intel and is called the Quad Core Extreme Processor. The fastest available. Down from that there is the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme. Another high performance processor. Capable of running any and several demanding applications. Pentium processors are now out of date and V//V processors are multimedia based. Athlons (AMD's) are also another possibility but you will not get the performance out of these as you would with an Intel.

Another option is to get a dual socket motherboard, (this enables you to put 2 processors onto 1 motherboard. I have 2 Intel Xeon processors on mine and this works like a dream. Xeon processors are another Intel processor option and are quite often used in servers well suited for high speed data transfer and running several applications.

Really its down to you and what you use your PC for. Overall though the best Processor on the Market is the Intel Quad Core Extreme Series.

At this stage in life you are unlikely to find a laptop on the market with a quad core processor installed. So for a laptop you are best to look for a high performance Core 2 Duo one. If you ask in the shops they will inform you of all the possibilities.
