A regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal says there is a huge divide between those who give to charity and those who don't.

Brooks says when he began his research, he expected to find proof that liberals are the more generous group in America. But his findings show that conservatives are more generous in every way -- from volunteering, to donating blood, to giving money.

For example, homes headed by a conservative gave 30 percent more money to charity in 2000 than liberal families. .

Brooks explains that, according to his research, a household headed by a conservative, on average, gives 30 percent more dollars to charity than does one headed by a liberal -- despite earning six percent less income. He finds that significant.

I m going to say that its because of the difference in beliefs

Liberals tend to think the government should provide chairty - so they leave it to the government

Conservatives believe community charity, so they dont wait for the government.

i think of i might could see what all became lined in the class of a donation. Numbers won't lie, yet they are able to be twisted to coach something you go with them to. additionally you observed that the decrease classification and the decrease center classification gave a bigger proportion of their earning than the middle and uppermiddle training did. perhaps the totals come out the way they do no longer because of the fact liberals are not giving, it form of feels they're giving a bigger proportion, yet because of the fact in terms of chilly problematic money the conservatives have seen their earnings strengthen, whilst liberals (unions, the undesirable, etc.) have seen their earning shrink. a bigger proportion of a smaller huge form is seldom going to offset a smaller proportion of a great volume. might you somewhat get 10% of $10,000.00 or 3% of $50,000.00? i might could see the learn and the regulations before blindly believing that learn. i understand UNICEF, United way, MDA, and an incredible form of the different charity agencies are in any respect time lows for donations. That tells me that the no-strings charities that help the needy are not getting the money. If there are strings linked to a donation, so a techniques as i'm worried that's no longer charity, it truly is blackmail.

Both liberals and conservatives are generous.

Conservatives are generous with their money
Liberals are generous with everyone else's money

The reason? Liberalism is a religion about self first. Everything is about what can I get from you. True conservatism, which not all conservatives understand, has a basis in Christianity and understands serve others first and the returns will be plentiful.

Sway 27 got it right. That's one of the reasons the left insists that anyone who's a little down on their luck would get tossed into the sea in anything less than a nanny state. The reality is that if you free productive people from their massive tax burden tossed on them so the state can dish out all that "compassion" you'd find them to be quite generous indeed. I often wonder how the left lives with themselves and their conceit.

I think this is true.
very good answers above. I also think that while conservatives do not want their money demanded from them in taxes they will gladly give where they see need. I also think it is based on faith and values. I was raised in this type of conservative home.
Also conservatives will give to what they feel they should and they do not like people Telling them where their money should go. For instance they might want to give money through christian organizations but not to Naral, as they do not believe in that.

I liked this note from teh article

'Another observation from Brooks' findings: liberals typically want everyone's tax dollars to support government entitlement programs -- but are hesitant to give their own money to those same programs, even when the government subsidies are inadequate. '

So true, you have all those bands and gore on the live earth thing... how many of them are actually reaching into their wallets and giving money to charity...

Neo-con economic policies might create poverty, but conservative ones don't.

Back to the question, it is a matter of perspective. Conservatives are willing to commit their own money to help others. Liberals are willing to commit government(read: others') money to help others.

That's true, remember Al Gore's taxes came out.He only gave a few hundred bucks.I think maybe lib's think the Government should take care of us.Con's think we should take care of ourselves first then help others.More actually filters down to the people who need it that way.

based on his quotes in the link,i'm thinking this 'research' is more 'agenda-driven' than factual...i would love to see his 'methodology'-and i can usually smell a rat when the wall street journal is involved...their editorial staff still thinks clinton murdered vince foster...and to think, they're having a hissy fit over murdoch wanting to buy them? sounds like a perfect fit to me
