I recently dropped my keys through the crack between the elevator and the floor. I dropped it at the ground floor. I'm wondering how to stop the elevator on the second floor and open the first floor door and pick them up. I'm low on cash and the man that knows how to open it will charge me $700. I need help please.

Thank you.

It's possible but not advisable. Unless you can shut the power off to the car while it's on the second floor to keep it from moving there's a chance you could get crushed by it. Most elevators have a door opening device on them, it's usually a hole near the top right corner of the door leading to a trip lever that will unlatch the door. But lots of times they take a special key or piece of formed metal to spring the latch and let the doors open without the car being there. Sounds like the elevator man is a con artist because most of the elevators I've worked on, the door can be tripped open in a matter of seconds.

I would have a chat with the building manager or head maintenance man, and then maybe a chat with a police officer because I can't think of any good reason why it would cost $700 to retrieve some keys. That's extortion.

Is there anyway you can get a coat hanger in the shape of a hook through the crack to retrieve your keys? Or maybe a good strong magnet attached to a string??? $700. seem to be a lot of money to charge for that.
