Well, at one level no one cares about them anymore than the rich. Income has been rising for two hundred years and it has increased across the board. If you are asking comparatively, then pay is based upon skills and scarcity. Almost everyone could work at McDonald's, so given the giant supply of potential workers, but only a limited demand by McDonald's the pay is very low. On the other hand, few people can be neurosurgeons, given the tight labor supply and the substantial demand, they are paid very generously. You can only get better off by education and competing at very high levels constantly.
No one will make them better, they have to do it themselves or poor people in other countries will outcompete them and cut their wages.
