I live in Maryland, and there are no Sonics here, but why do they have commercials playing? Its rather annoying as sh*t, build a Sonic in the state or just take the commercial out.

I have often had this same thought. They must spend a gold mine on advertising. I live in the Chicago area and there isn't a Sonic within 100 miles, maybe more. I have no idea why they act like they are McDonald's. It's not even like I really want a Sonic, but I am sick of their commercials. I think it's a poor business model since all that money could have gone into expansion, but hell what do I know?

If you're watching a network show (rather than one that is produced locally) many of the commercials are country-wide along with the network show. Doesn't matter where you live or where the nearest Sonic is.

haha i was JUST thinking that earlier. i live in illinois and i see at least 2-3 commercials for Sonic a day which sucks because the food looks so good but theres not one around.

my friends once drove 2 hours just to go to a Sonic. apparently its as good as it looks on tv.

Just because they don't have them in the state does not mean that people in Maryland don't. 1. Travel to places that do have them. 2. Leave close to ones in other states. Name recognition is important and if people are familiar with the name they are more likely to stop and try it out. They actually may be planning to build some in Maryland and building demand.

Maryland is in the middle of a field of 5 Sonics: Fredericksburg, VA; Morgantown, PA; Bridgeville, DE; Ephrata, PA; and Dover, DE.

Advertising on a central TV station to those areas makes sense.

You could just mute the TV.

They air in Maryland, most likley, to make people aware of the Sonic name. This will make it easier for Sonic to open up restaurants In Maryland.

1. Expand brand recognition in target area
2. Create/Increase demand in target area
3. Study Market to determine market attractiveness
4. Sink $$$$ in Stores only when market is attractive

Seems to be their biz model re: advertising
