Hi,

If there is an option for 1GB RAM you could drop to that - but NOT any lower...

You could also go for a lower spec (slower) processor, e.g. drop the AMD Turion 64 for something like the AMD Sempron 3500+ instead.

In addition consider dropping from a 15.4 WXGA screen to a 14.1 WXGA

...apart from that I would keep the rest.

Had you also checked the DELL Outlet store for any last minute bargins?

Drop from 2 gigs of ram to 1 and a half gigs. Go with the basic version of Vista and maybe change the monitor to a more basic model. You could also downgrade the graphics card but I wouldn't recommend it unless you went to the basic version of Vista because Vista requires a good graphics card for the Aero feature. You could make probably $120 saving on these.

Memory has nothing to do with holding your data(songs). That's the hard drives job. You could cut the memory down to 1gb (it's @ 2gb in the config) but that's not going to save you a lot. I assume this is a laptop so there's not a lot you can cut out. If you're looking for a cheap laptop look at ebay for a used one. You don't need a really powerful machine to surf and burn cds.

Running Vista you can't. Vista is a memory hog and you will need all the power you can get to run it and do all the other stuff you want. For a less expensive easier to use option look at Apple products they have a much simpler platform and higher memory capacity. Good Luck!

Well...you can leave out the genuine windows vista and get a copy of them from a friend or download with a torrent.
You can teke a 80 GB Hard disk instead of 120,also can take an old monitor (CRT) instead of the new one (TFT)

Finally you can get a cheaper sound card and graphic card.

well you haven't told us the cost so it pretty hard to tell you what you should do.
