Those who have so many points obviously have spent a good deal of time here but I doubt very much it's about points, like you said it's not like you are paid monetary compensation for your time.
When I receive a thumbs up it's validating and when I receive a star it's a compliment and a best answer says I have been of use and may have actually helped someone.
I wouldn't criticize anyone for how they are spending their time and especially not here since they are helping other people with answers, and participating in a community which may not be your cup of tea but which does nonetheless provide a lot of fun, support, entertainment, and friendship for many people.

Thank God someone else feels the same way I do...
I know, I seen this "top contributer" with a picture of the profile of a beatiful blonde girls' face with like ten zillion points-
I was thinking, If she had half the beauty that is in that picture, she would be so busy modeling that she woulnt even know what the f*ck yahoo even was. And im sure people choose her answers as best answers because some of them are intelligent, yes, but mostly because they're thinking she's this hot smart chick...lol
Now, in reality, Im sure the B*tch is old, ugly and/or fat, living on welfare, and spending her life typing answers, just like (im sure) many others that achieve the "top contributer" status in like two days of being on here.
But SERIOUSLY (lol)- some of these people should get paid doing something similar, only for the work industry. Because we all knw that those people who type for a living, certainly arent going to go home and sit on Yahoo!Answers all night....
And anyone who has worked a full-time job EVER in their life, isnt going to rush home to get on this site unless they have no life outside of work....like NERDS, ya know?
The other day I read this question that asked, "Do you look like your Avatar?" and way too many people responded with a "yes, exactly." reply.... Right. like over a hudred people have....the same size BIG blue eyes......are wearing the SAME outfit, with the SAME haircut, hat, earings..etc...
Maybe in their DREAMS...

Sorta care. But really it's more about the entertainment factor. That and getting top answers is cool. But the points are just something to add some fun, some people do take them way too seriously though.

I don't REALLY care about points but when I see a really stupid question, I must admit I check to see how many points the asker has and I feel a certain sense of satisfaction when I see that I have more points than they do.
I always have more points than the morons.
Always.

just a bit. Being able to go up level, which gives you the ability to do more stuff than a lower level does, makes me want to accomplish it. But im not on 24/7
Also, I dont want to run out of points because each day it seems like I have more and more questions.

Explicitly I don't really care, but when I level up it feels like I accomplished something =)
The real fun is getting a best answer and good compliment by an asker and felt that you helped someone.

I come on here once in a while but why do you care if someone is on here 24/7. How would you know that unless you yourself were on here as well.
