May 25th, 2007

I've been going to Braves games for a good 18 years and never caught a single home run ball, foul ball, or even a ball tossed into the stands by a player.

Anyway, I was back home on leave from the Army, currently stationed at Fort Benning, and went to the Braves game with my Dad. We were in the same seats we've been in for a good 6-7 years, right-center field in the first row seats 5-8. Jayson Werth one of the outfielders for the Phillies hit a blast that was coming right at me, thought it was going to be short but I ended up catching it. Yeah, I know, it was from the opposing team but I still caught a HR ball. Once in a lifetime opportunity!

Ebbets Field in Brooklyn during the 1955 World Series. It was a foul ball hit by the Dodgers' Duke Snider off Yankees' pitcher Whitey Ford. Twenty years later I had Duke autograph it at his Fallbrook, Calfornia restaurant.

On two seperate occasions, I nearly caught one but missed. First one was last year, on an Abreu HR - I was next to a chubby guy and leaped for a ball, but it trickled off my fingers (it hurt like hell, by the way), and somebody behind me who had a glove got it.

Second time, it was a few years ago, Tino Martinez launched one to upper right, the ball appeared to be coming right towards me (and it would've), but at the very last second, it hit the foul pole. If it hadn't, I was certain that ball was coming right FOR me.

I have caught a handful of balls at minor league games. Last year I had one hit a railing down the line, fly up in the air, and land in my lap. Easiest catch ever.

The best one was when I took a glancing blow off the head on a foul ball from Ron Tingley, who played in the majors briefly. I got the ball autographed, and he signed it, "Watch your head! Ron Tingley."
