Short Wave Listening is definitely not obsolete. There is plenty to hear that is not on the Internet. In addition to broadcasts in numerous languages, you can also hear Amateur Radio stations and a number of unusual communications systems. You might even pick up a station sending coded messages from some government's Intelligence Agency to its operatives in the field, or military communications of various kinds. The best part is that, on any given day, you can stumble across something intriguing that you've never heard before. It's a great hobby!

Crystal sets for shortwave are quite challenging to build unlike AM band ones.
A combination of the low signal strength and closely spaced stations makes it hard for them to work correctly.
This means that there designs generally have to be quite advanced , complicated , and expensive.

So there are not too many people in the world that sell X-tal sets for shortwave.
