Because we are arrogant and forget that while we saved their country in WWII they bankrupted themselves supporting us in the Revolutionary War.
America WOULD NOT EXIST without the French. That's a debt that can never be fully repaid.

France really started it. When we saved their *** from the nazi's they got mad because they knew that was bigger than helping us against the british. Becasue Hitler would have destroyed their whole country. Then it got worst when france back out in the Irag war which I think was right. So the media infected our minds by selling the french are puss y's. The dumbest thing was when we said we should change french fries and french toast to american fries and american toast. I almost laughed my *** off.

Its just the media. I rarely see a Frenchman presented in the news that I would like, yet every Frenchman I have ever met in person was warm, friendly and courteous. I tend to believe that is how average French people are, not how they are portrayed in the news. Sadly, many Americans only know the French from television, so they dislike what they see. If every American could spend an hour with a person from France, I'm sure that Franco-American relations would improve instantly! Vive la France!

Only a small minority of Americans hate the French. Unfortunately, this minority gets a lot fo press and they like to complain about pointless things A LOT.
They want you to hate the French because they don't want you to seriously pay attention to what they are doing. They have a healthcare system that is very different from ours, and it is one that really takes care of people and families. It would kill America's billion dollar insurance industry if the U.S. instituted a program like France's that actually focuses on making people better instead of making more money for the insurance companies. As a result of their health program, France enjoys a longer life expectancy and a better quality of life than the US. This is something the France-haters do NOT want you to know.
The French and Americans have a lot in common, which is another reason this group may not like them. They are both generally proud people who have made enormous contributions to the world and think their way of doing things is the best. With egos like this, there's bound to be a little friction.

What do you mean? I'm American and I occassionally contact my Dad's old friend who is French and lives in France. My Dad is no longer living and I send this guy letters every so often. I wish I could learn more about France, I don't know all that much about their cultures, but this question you ask is just stereotypical and not true.

I don't think American people necessarily hate French people, but many on the right (like some of the answerers above) have been lied to about the French and how snotty they are. Then when France would not support the war in Iraq, the neocons cranked up the anti-French propaganda.
In his new movie "Sicko," Michael Moore asks what the motive may have been for trying to turn us against the French. He comes up with some interesting ideas.

The American's don't hate the French. That's political garbage dreamed up by the media who think that all countries should agree with American policy regardless of the consequences. France opposed the war in Iraq on both legal grounds and under the auspices of self-interest and the American people don't like anybody to oppose their government for any reason, even if that reason be justified. Being arrogant and self-righteous doesn't mean they hate them, though. The truth is, that in general, the Americans and French are an awful lot alike in general.
The media would have you believe the two countries hate each other. If an American visited France or vice-versa, I think they would find that most of the people in either country are fairly nice people.

I actually quite like France, the culture and the people. I've been there many times and have been treated both rudely and courteously. I have to say that my experiences overall have been positive, so much so that I'm going back for a week on vacation with my wife this September.

Well you might start by asking the French why they hate Americans, I've heard I don't know how many stories of people who have gone to France and been treated like utter crap, and this is going back to the 60's. I've heard stories from Americans who speak French of the people who they came in contact with who would insult them up one side and down the other, not knowing that the person could understand them, calling the woman they were with whores and worse and just a litany of whatever they could think of and all the person did was sit down in a restaurant or tried to buy something on the street or whatever. Who knows how many millions of people they did that to over the years, so if you want an answer to your question maybe you should start there.

Difference of opinion. It is easier to hate people that are different than to listen and try to understand them. Its funny a lot of people think the Americans came in and saved the french in WW2. I seem to recall a certain country doing very little other then make money off the war until a certain harbour got bombed. If they wnated to help the french they would have come in sooner.

I don't know of anyone who hates French people in the USA.
I love all people and I don't hate anyone.
Also, my ancestors are French.
I just saw on the news that many French people are mad at their president because he jogs. Why do you not like this? Why is it different from riding your bike or swimming? It is just a form of exercize and there is nothing wrong with it.
