If you're REALLY new, don't know much and don't really have anything then I would suggest, The Condensed 21st Century Guide To King Crimson which is an edited form of The 21st Century Guide Volumes 1(1969-1974) & 2(1981-2003) box sets. Avoid those box sets if you think you might end up buying most or even all of the band's albums. The Condensed is a two cd set put together by Robert Fripp and spans 1969 to 2003 missing only two studio albums-Lizard from 12/70 and The ConstruKCtion Of Light from 5/2000. No live stuff is included. This will give you a glimpse of the band's different eras and then you can figure out what era you really want to hit next.

You definitely should start out with albums like, "In the Court of the Crimson King," "Discipline," "Thrak," "Red." Their lineups have changed a lot, Fripp being the only constant member, so picking up all their studio albums would be excellent. I also agree on Grateful Jerry's recommendation of "The Condensed 21st Century Guide to King Crimson: 1969-2003 ," as it contains some of their masterpieces from different eras, and would be a good choice for a beginner.

It really depends on your tastes, because their work changed so much over the years. The debut album "In the Court of the Crimson King" is a good bet. I also like "Discipline," even though it has a dated 80s sound.
