Avignon, during the Great Schism which ended in 1414, there was a pope in Avignon and Rome, and for about 4 years, there was 3 popes.

The French city of Avignon replaced Rome as home to the Papacy between 1309-1377. The town remained under papal control until 1791, when it was incorporated into France.

Avignon. The papal palaces are still there, you can visit them as museums. I was there years ago, and walking through that section of the city transports you to medieval times. Eerie.
