Sometimes if you download software from file sharing sites, your computer will have drivers changed and things of that nature and the sound card will not work. I don't know why it does it, I just know that I downloaded Limewire and it disabled my cd burner and the sound went away, when I took it to the repair place and my computer was cleaned and Windows reinstalled, the sound was back.

If all else(mentioned above) fails, you might have burnt out the part of your motherboard that controls sound--if so, this can be fixed by installing an inexpensive sound card to your motherboard. Before you buy one make sure its AGP or PCI. Do this as a last resort as it my be something with a bad connection.
