Does it come down to one simple thing...jealousy? Are these anti-monarchists angry that they don't have all that wealth and power? They claim that the monarchy is not fair. Not fair to who---them? Do you anti-monarchist think that any average joe would have a chance in hell of being elected head of state if the throne was abolished? No, the post would go to he/she hat has the most connections and the most money to campaign. And one has to wonder what kind of person would want to be elected to such a position---probably some egomaniac that wants to be seen by everyone as they do their ceremonial work for the country. I'm sorry that this is quickly turning into a rant on my part, but I just don't get the draw behind the logic. Why does every single ******* post in the country need to be chosen by the people? Complete democracy is VERY overrated. When people are demanding to pick a purely ceremonial position with absolutely NO power whatsoever, we have to re-examine our priorities.

shericomes, I do not think they are egomaniacs. Most probably hate all the attention such a high-profile position gives them. But the reason they keep the stressful job is because they have to. They were born into it and that's the way it is. But if this high-profile post was ELECTED, people would have to want it. And I wonder why any person would actively seek a job like this, if not solely because of all the attention it provides.

Oh, and Person_01, nice comeback. You made my day :)

I'm a Yank, so don't care all that much.

But you're imputing really bad reasons unjustly.

If you really wanted to know, you'd ask, rather than assume.

I would GUESS that they resent the cost of maintaining it, the fact that they don't really do anything -- I mean, they don't run things, like in the Bad Old Days.

Also, over here _I_ get sick of hearing about them, and I don't have them in my face as often as you folks do.

(It's very odd to me that people this side of the pond seem to care so much about someone else's royalty. And Di is dead, already. Yeah, she promoted some good things, but give it a rest; she was no goddess.)

Assuming they are jealous is just disingenuous.

What I wonder is why more people don't call for their abolition.

After all, they are in their position through no talent, ability, or anything they've done, except being born.

Yet everyone has to hear about them all the time.

And they often seem kinda messed up, if you know what I mean.

I imagine that if I were a Brit, I'd think they were a waste of money, and would be sick of hearing about them all the time.

Like I've felt about famous people here (children, can YOU say, Paris? Nicole? to mention 2 recent examples).

It's annoying when you want to find out what's going on in the world, that is, what IMPORTANT things are going on, and all you get is gossip about a bunch of people who've done nothing to earn their position.

Heck, even people who HAVE earned fame, doesn't mean I want to hear about every stupid thing about their lives every day.

And, no, I'm not being jealous, as I would HATE fame, myself.

I know you weren't interested in hearing from a Yankee, but, international site, so, oh, well.

You're absolutely right, it's jealousy. Nobody would want the job, if they had a chance. They would be on duty 24/7 for the rest of their life, with cameras shoved in their faces every time they turned around. Less privacy than the proverbial goldfish, and criticized for the most infinitesimal slip. It would be like living in a pressure cooker. No wonder that so many spouses couldn't stand the life.

It gives you a sense of how devoted the Queen is to her duty. And she can't look forward to retirement, like most of us.

kid. where the hell are you coming from?
if you actually think anybody with out connections or money has a say in anything, then you are greatly mistaken. Money runs everything, world leaders don't do their jobs for the fame.
They do it for more money. It's ******' organized crime in the highest degree. Don't worry about democracy, because that form of government does not function as long as greedy dick wads like politicians are around.

It's time Britain grew up and became a real democracy. How can they send soldiers to die in Iraq so the people can elect their own head of state when the same freedom is denied the British people.

well it is about this poor farmer, who had no land and had to work on other peoples land.

he had only one possession of his own in this world - his hand plough, made up of a wooden handle and an iron blade. He

lived for free in a small chamber of a farm house owned by somebody else.

one day he thought, "to hell with this earthly life, I am going to live an ascetic life in the forest. He wanted to live in

peace and careless and free like an animal, away from all worries of the world.

so he left his plough in his chamber and went to the forest and lived there and found peace of mind. But this lasted for

only a few days! the thought of his hand plough was troubling him. Termites might have started on its wooden handle or

somebody would have already got his hand on it etc

he finally couldn’t bear no more and returned back to the farm.

after a few months of the same life he again thought about living in the forest and finding peace

so he set out again

but again the thought of his hand plough troubled him and he had to return within a few weeks of living the ascetic life in

forest

this thing repeated for 6 more times! every time he had to return to his farm. the 7 th time the poor farmer declared - "I

will throw away my only possession and get rid of the problem for good"

he decided to throw the hand plough in the near by river and climbed up on a small hillock on the banks. he was quite clever

so he decided he would close his eyes when he threw the plough so that he will not be able to come back and retrieve it again

even if he wished to.

so he closed his eyes and swung the hand plough around his head three times and with a loud cry, threw it as far in to the

river as he could

he was finally happy and laughing and declared "I WON" and started climbing down the hill

but the king of the land was camping on the same hillock, on the way back to his palace. He had been fighting big wars with

many of the neighboring kings and had defeated them all and was coming back victorious

he heard the big cry "I WON" and wondered who it must be. so he asked his soldiers to fetch the man

he saw it was only our poor farmer, still with a great smile on his face, like that smile on the face of a tiger who had

secretly swallowed the hunter.

the king said in amusement - "Hey man, I have won the big war on my enemies and added a lot of land to my kingdom. I thought

I was the one who was the big winner here and the most happy. May I ask you to explain your loud cry "I WON" and the happy

smile on your face?

the farmer who was still very happy and smiling, told the king, "your majesty, I have conquered myself! and that’s why I

cried I WON. I am going to the forest, I want nothing any more and I have nothing to worry about"

Yes. I am jealous of royals. They are worshipped as gods by their people, and what sets them apart from anyone? Their ancestry? Ridiculous. Look how good Louis XIV was to France, and how good Henri VI was to England. The fact is that, even if your parents were Gandhi and Mother Teresa, you could still turn out an Adolph Hitler. Family relationships are no better a basis for inheriting "Divine right" than skin color is a good basis on which to receive civil right.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Jealousy is a b*tch and sadly, living in the fishbowl that is their life they just can't escape it. If everyone had that kind of scrutiny, we'd all crack up. They do their job & they do it well. People need to just back off and leave them be.

if given the chance to assume the position of the existing royalty, most regular people wouldnt like it
Being able to eat quail eggs when you feel like it is hardly a good trade off for being under a spotlight 24/7.

I really don't care about the monarchy one way or the other - if they were abolished I don't think the Government would be giving any of my hard earned taxes back, do you?

i don't really have a problem with monarchy. theres nothing wrong with it in my mind. over in the U.S. they have presidents. the only difference between the 2 really is that the president only rules for 4 years and the kings and queens rule pretty much till they die. i don't really mind who rules as long as they do a good job at it.
