How to check if UPS is working fine?

i hav a UPS from HCL ( power mate 600SL E )
when the power goes off it blinks with an orange light.

But when i checked the power options from control pannel, under ups tab it is said "The UPS service is currently stopped" what is this? and how do i enable it?

A UPS should come with software, reinstall it.

Then to test it, turn off socket supplying UPS if PC does not instantly die, it's working, if it shuts down correctly so is the software

You can put a electric bulb in your UPS socket and switch it on.
Now switch off the mains power that goes to you ups.
now if bulb remains glow, then your ups is working fine.

The error you are describing from control panel is coming due to the service, ups service is not running means, the service which monitor UPS in your computer is not running.

to enable it, follow
right click on My Computer
select manage
now in left panel select services
in right panel select uninterrupted power supply
right click it and select start.

now I hope your problem get solved.
