Lightning actually originates from the ground up, so as it may have looked like it hit ground it was actually leaving it!! Not rare at all!

6 feet away? Improbable, the lightning would shock through the ground and injure you. Where were you? Does your backyard have a lot of trees, or is it a large field? It's not impossible for lightning to hit the bare ground, but it would be more attracted to trees or other objects.

In spite of your Yahoo name, Krazy, I certainly believe you. What you witnessed in not all that uncommon. Some people are injured by such close encounters with lightening, and some aren't. I was 15 years old when lightening struck the tractor I was driving. All I remember is seeing white, and then my father carrying me as he ran across a field. I lost an ear drum out of the this strike. I feel that's not a bad sacrifice for such an encounter. Since then I've seen "ball lightening" follow a high-tension power line, and several other strikes to the ground, but from safe distances. FYI; the man currently holding the record for being struck the most lives in NY State. He has been struck seven times. (Hard to keep friends in a storm.)

Of all the lightning strikes in the world only about 20% of them actually hit the ground. Most stay in the air horizontally.

Cloud to ground lightning is rare because most lightning goes in the reverse order; ground to cloud.

No it is not rare to see lightning "strike" but actually it goes from the ground to the cloud, it is just such a quick & intense flash for our eyes to catch where it originates from & we automatically associate it with the clouds (since that is where the storm is), there is also cloud to ground lightening, but it is not as common.
