I left a good job with job security which had become a tad boring to become a manager with a small local business. Some of the workforce are members of a lodge that the MD is also a member of and also he has members of his family working there. One of the employees has been there since the start and thinks I have it in for him. I am there to introduce procedures to enforce some kind of organisation to the company and it feels like I'm banging my head against a brick wall. I found out last week that I'm known as "Hitler"!! I have been crying non-stop (not at work though!) since an argument with a colleague and feel like I've made the biggest mistake of my life taking on this role.

I have been there since 1st May. I had already holidays booked for mid June and it's been worse since I came back. The job should be great and I was commended in my last job for implementing the same kind of stuff!

To Jace - I like the MD and admire how he has built up the business and I don't want anyone to ruin it for him - I think I'm more loyal than anyone else!! I will succeed - it must be the "Robert the Bruce" in me!!

As a manager you MUST have a tough outer shell especially if you are new to the organization and especially if you are new to an organization that requires motivation and direction.

It's common to get push-back from people who resist change -- and it's human nature to resist change. Your underlings and direct reports probably don't realize or respect the fact that you were hired to do a job and that if you don't do it you risk losing your job for non-performance.

By the way, when a slacker starts throwing names like "Hitler" take it as a compliment! It means that you are getting noticed and are probably making some worthwhile changes for the benefit of your employer, i.e. you are doing your job.

Keep in mind that the folks who work under you are not your colleagues but are your subordinates. Your colleagues are those who are on an equal footing with you within the organization. If you are the head of Operations, the Comptroller would be your colleague but a shift supervisor or production worker would not be.

Have regular meetings with YOUR boss to report your progress and to chart the direction that the area you are responsible for needs to go and how you will take it there. Do keep him or her apprised of any resistance that you are encountering, not as a complaint about how you are being treated but as a factual comment as to who is pushing back and how you and your boss might handle the situation.

Sometimes a loudmouth is just that: A loudmouth. They complain and winge but do their job as instructed. If so a quiet word about keeping the nasty comments down may be all that's needed. And if they are doing something well, make sure that everyone knows about that. Praise in public and criticize in private.

And NEVER get into a public argument with anyone, boss, colleague or subordinate. That shows extremely bad form and will get you marked as a hothead and is a career-killer in a business setting. If someone does or says something that gets your dander up, take it behind closed doors if possible or just walk away. If they try to pursue the issue in public, firmly, calmly, and politely tell them that this is NOT the appropriate venue but you'll be happy to discuss it in private once tempers calm down.

Toughen up. Don't let the bastards grind you down. Stand proudly and firmly and let them know who is boss and that you won't tolerate disrespect within the workplace regardless of whom it is directed against. You've got a job to do, now go out there and DO it!

Good luck!

First of all congratulations on the new job.

DO NOT QUIT! Do not them push you over. I was in the same situation last summer, I got promoted within the company, and was the youngest member of the team, and the team did not like it. In fact I would call it bullying how I was treated, but I stuck to it I too cried at home, and never let on that they upset me. By the end of the summer I got the respect I deserved and earned. This family business needs some order so that the fact that they call you 'Hitler' says you are doing a good job. Hitler although not great on morals was a good leader. Take it as a compliment. They are clearly threatened by your work, which they should be, you were invited to the company to put some order in the organization, the name calling kinda is like school playground, no wonder you were brought into the company.
So just think when they are being idiots, you earned that role because you are mature enough to take on the job of setting the rules and whipping the whip. Although you do sound really friendly and distraught by this, you should not be threatened by your own people skills.
A good trick is to make an example of someone, policies are made for all members of staff not just those who are the bottom of the company. You too have rights.

So good luck, I really hope you whip them into action. Please do not quit, you sound like you are doing a good job. Do not think of it as a mistake, more of chance to thicken your skin and challange yourself. I really do hope you contiune your role.

I will answer your question with one of my own. From what you say the place is not very efficient. Are you capable of making it more efficient? If you answer yes to that then carry on , I suggest that you explain that you are not being awkward or bullying the staff but simply trying to improve the company which in turn will safeguard their jobs. Old saying, you can't make an ommelette without breaking eggs. Stick to your guns and do the job, otherwise as you say yourself they win. Good Luck whatever you decide.

I study someplace that Gerry McCann has now admitted that they could desire to not have left Madeleine on my own in an unlocked house. His preliminary assertion that "that they had carried out not something incorrect" replaced into made on criminal suggestion. Even at that early point he replaced into attempting to "cover his very own lower back" to guard his occupation. possibly that replaced into why he made the "wreck in" assertion as properly. If the time-honored public had realised then how negligent those human beings have been, could they have donated plenty to the fund?

If you are going home crying because f a job and it is causing you this much stress, why stay there. If you do not like your job, start looking for another one. Why be miserable at a place, when there is jobs at there you can do, and be happy.

This is not about letting them "win", this is about you. What do you want to do?
