my friend and i want to go see Knocked Up tonight, but it's rated R and we're both 17. i've seen some movies that are rated R and say 'no one under 17 admitted'. i have a state ID to prove that i'm 17, but would we be able to see the movie?

You only need to be 17 to get in to a rated R movie, but some of the theaters in Charleston SC where I live will not let you buy more than one ticket if your are under 18. so you should be fine enjoy the movie

If you're 17, you can get in. 'R' means 'under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian'. If you saw a poster saying 'no one under 17 admitted,' that movie was rated NC-17.

"No one under 17 admitted" means 16 and under. 17 is not "under 17". And that rule applies for ALL rated "R" movies. So you are good to go.

Very often it's up to the discretion of the theater. My kids both worked for a Carmike Cinema, and their policy was no one under 18 without a parent or guardian. But they knew of other theater chains that let in 17 year olds.
