In the days of sailing ships (with the tall masts, big sails, etc), the letters SS were placed on their sides to stand for SAILING SHIP, so it wouldn't be mistaken for a cargo ship, for example. When the sails became outdated, the letters referred to STEAMSHIP. Nowadays, USS refers to UNITED STATES SHIP.
